Discussion on Political Violence
During a recent segment on NewsNation’s “The Elizabeth Vargas Report,” Representative Suhas Subrahmanyam (D-Va.) addressed the issue of political violence. When asked about the escalating left-wing political violence, he responded, “No. I think there’s political violence on both sides, but it’s not that one side is greater than the other.” He also commented on the political climate, stating, “President Trump has lowered the bar in politics. The solution is for both sides to acknowledge this issue and recognize that it affects everyone. Unfortunately, that’s not happening right now—it’s more of a blame game, and we need to put an end to that.”
Host Elizabeth Vargas brought up the current scrutiny of political speech, noting that the Trump administration has attributed threats against him to Democrats. She referenced recent remarks from the Speaker of the House, who criticized this blaming of the left. In response, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) suggested that the focus should be on addressing one’s own party. Vargas highlighted that there have been three attempts on President Trump’s life in two years and cited statistics indicating that in 2025, political violence from the left might outpace that from the right—a troubling trend.
Subrahmanyam reiterated his view, emphasizing that blame should not be solely directed at one side. “If all Democrats are held accountable for every threat against President Trump, then my safety would be at stake too. This is an issue that involves both sides. Blaming others during incidents like these doesn’t help,” he stated.
Vargas added to the conversation by pointing out individuals on the left, such as Hassan Piker, who are often supported by Democrats and make provocative statements on social media. “Social media has allowed people to express themselves in ways many wouldn’t have considered just a few years ago,” she noted.
Subrahmanyam agreed, stating, “President Trump has indeed lowered the standards in politics over the past eight years. He has incited violence, which led to his impeachment following the events of January 6th. Both sides need to recognize this situation as a collective issue, but instead, we continue this blame game and that needs to change.”
