Schiff Avoids Question on Platner’s Support Amid Controversies
Senator Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, sidestepped inquiries regarding his support for Graham Platner, a Maine Democrat facing numerous controversies. Platner’s candidacy has become a significant talking point, yet it seems to elicit mixed feelings among Democrats.
When pressed by Fox News Digital about whether he still backs Platner, Schiff simply responded, “I’m going to the interview upstairs.” Later, in a conversation with CNN, he mentioned he would “wait to learn more about recent allegations regarding texting other women.”
Schiff added, “Ultimately, Maine voters will decide how significant or trivial these issues are, especially concerning the economy and living costs. I’ll hold off on further comments until I gather more information from the last few days.” Despite his nuanced hesitation, Schiff, like many other Democrats, has not formally endorsed Platner.
Some Democrats seem more inclined to overlook a growing list of scandals surrounding their candidate. For instance, Senator Angela Alsobrooks from Maryland, although lacking a formal endorsement for Platner, voiced her overarching support for the party. “I support all Democrats,” she told FOX News Digital, adding, “I don’t know him personally. To be honest, I’ve never met him. But my priority is advancing the Democratic agenda to counter Donald Trump’s influence.”
The scrutiny of Platner intensified after a series of public relations setbacks came to light, particularly a surveillance video showing him getting a tattoo of the Totenkopf, a symbol associated with Nazi Germany. Recent weeks have seen old posts from Reddit resurfacing, where Platner made remarks about veterans and sexual assault. On top of that, he’s been entangled in a sexting scandal and has maintained a profile on the contentious Kik messaging platform.
Despite these challenges, he’s scheduled to head to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday for meetings with Senate Democrats.
Support from Sanders Amid Controversies
Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont has emerged as one of Platner’s most vocal backers, attributing the various scandals to the candidate’s stance against billionaires. Sanders stated, “The reality is that billionaires have committed to spending around $90 million in a small state like Maine, and they clearly don’t want him to succeed.”
Other Democratic senators, like Ruben Gallego from Arizona, show no sign of abandoning their candidate. Meanwhile, Republicans quickly capitalize on Platner’s misfortunes, aligning themselves firmly with Senator Susan Collins, a longtime incumbent in Maine.
Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana shared his insights, commenting on how voters might perceive Platner: “I think that’s how most fair-minded Americans view Mr. Platner. They believe Jesus loves him, but they also think he’s a fool.” This sentiment reflects the complex, often contradictory emotions surrounding Platner’s controversial run for Senate.
