Democrats found themselves the subject of mockery on social media after several clips from a rally, dubbed a boycott of the State of the Union, began circulating widely. This included a moment where Trump supporters disrupted Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) while he was speaking.
The rally, which Democrats referred to as a boycott, had several attendees, such as Murphy, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-Washington). One protester shouted, “Go Trump!” while making a peace sign near Murphy, who observed as security escorted the individual away from the stage.
Another protester chanted, “Hey, Murphy, you suck,” to which the senator replied, “Thanks, buddy.” Online reactions quickly turned humorous, celebrating Trump supporters as “patriots.” Someone commented online, “Patriots smashed up a small Democratic insurrectionist in front of the Capitol and took the stage. Tonight was just a huge failure for the Democrats.”
With Democrats struggling to unify their base, many lawmakers used the event as an opportunity to excuse their absence from President Trump’s address. Murphy explained, “I will not be attending the State of the Union tonight because Donald Trump is making a mockery of this institution, and he doesn’t deserve an audience.” He emphasized that these were not ordinary times and that Democrats need to change their usual approach.
Around 20 Democratic members from both chambers were present at the event, with notable attendees including Senators Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.). They framed the gathering as a chance to discuss the state of the nation on their own terms.
As Trump delivered his speech, many conservative viewers praised it, even though he didn’t mention any support for the Democratic Party. Others, however, dismissed the Democrats’ rally as yet another partisan display. Comments like “The Courier, a fake news organization led by a senator,” highlighted how some observers viewed the event.
This messy mix of opinions and reactions provided quite a backdrop to what some perceived as just another ordinary political rift, although others thought it was more than that.
