Discover which 8 counties in Northern California PG&E might reduce power due to wildfire risks.

Residents across Northern California are facing potential power outages this weekend as PG&E considers shutting off electricity in areas susceptible to wildfires. This precaution comes as strong winds, extremely dry air, and parched vegetation create a serious fire risk.

According to PG&E, Public Safety Power Shutoffs may occur on Saturday and Sunday in eight counties close to the Sierra Nevada and Sacramento Valley. The company points out that roughly 14,000 customers in these counties could be impacted, though it emphasizes that not all areas within these counties will necessarily lose power. Instead, outages would focus on the highest-risk zones.

The counties potentially affected include El Dorado, Lassen, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, and Tehama.

PG&E’s Emergency Operations Center is fully active, and meteorologists are closely tracking fire weather conditions that are expected from tomorrow through Monday morning.

The National Weather Service has also raised alarms, declaring a Fire Weather Watch for parts of the Sacramento Valley and the northern Sierra foothills, effective from Saturday morning through Monday morning. They expect gusty winds, low humidity, and little overnight recovery from these harsh conditions over the weekend.

The highest winds are anticipated to hit the Sierra on Saturday, with sustained speeds ranging from 20 to 30 mph and gusts potentially reaching 45 mph. Ridgetops are at risk for even stronger winds, which might hit 55 mph.

While conditions may calm slightly on Sunday, the fire threat will not completely diminish. A shift to northwesterly winds is predicted, which could further lower humidity levels, increasing the risk of rapid flame spread through dry vegetation.

The National Weather Service reiterated that any fires igniting during this time could spread swiftly, as relative humidity might drop to between 10% and 25%. Moreover, PG&E has noted that moisture levels in brush are critically low, putting most plant species at a heightened risk of combustion.

On Sunday, PG&E plans to extend its watch to include Butte, Colusa, Glenn, and Yolo counties, which may also face power shutoffs if conditions worsen.

By Monday, it appears Tehama County will still be under watch for potential shutoffs, while Butte, Colusa, and Glenn counties will continue to be monitored. This threat of fire comes as cooler air from the Pacific Northwest begins to arrive, providing some respite from the recent heat wave.

But the cooling also brings strong winds, capable of transforming even minor sparks into rapid wildfires. Gusts in the Bay Area may reach 25 to 35 mph on Saturday, with even higher winds across the North and Central Sierra, possibly varying between 40 and 50 mph. The Sacramento Valley is also expected to experience another round of winds up to 35 mph on Sunday.

Forecasters predict that conditions will finally improve after the weekend, with fair and dryer weather expected across the region for much of the upcoming week.
