Establishment Media Fact Check Biden’s False Inflation Claim

At least six establishment media outlets have fact-checked the repeated false claim that inflation was 9 percent when President Joe Biden “took office.”

First fact-checked by Breitbart News and other media outlets in early May, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate for January 2021, the most recent measurement since President Biden took office, was 1.4 percent.

Breitbart News reported that under the Biden administration, inflation rose to historically high levels not seen since the early 1980s, largely due to Biden’s big spending policies.

Biden’s inflation rate peaked at 9.0% year-on-year in June 2022, about a year and a half after taking office. Inflation remains persistent and has recently risen again. Inflation rose to 3.5% in March.

A McDonald’s Big Mac burger, medium drink and medium fries meal costs $18 at some locations, an increase of $10 from 2018 when Donald Trump was president.

On Tuesday, Biden, who special counsel Robert Hur described as an “elderly man with a poor memory,” ignored fact-finding, once again repeating false claims and eliciting numerous fact-checks from establishment media outlets.

Associated Press (AP) rated Biden’s repeated claims are false:

AP Rating: False. Inflation is In 2021, when Mr. Biden took office, it was 1.4%, up from a low of 0.1% in May 2020, two months into the coronavirus pandemic. It continued to steadily increase during the first 17 months of Biden’s presidency, reaching a peak of 9.1% in June 2022. Data announced today As of last month, it was down to 3.4%.

CNN I have written:

Biden reiterated his claim about inflation, albeit in a slightly more vague form: Tuesday interview with Yahoo Finance. This time, he said, “I think inflation has gone up a bit. When I joined, he was at 9%, and now it’s down about 3%.”

A White House official said in an email to CNN on Tuesday: “The president was claiming that the factors that would cause inflation were in place when he took office. The pandemic caused inflation around the world by disrupting economies and disrupting supply chains.”

washington post Gave Biden Four Pinocchios:

Biden has tried to explain that inflation is primarily due to the pandemic, not his policies, and has said his administration has done much to bring inflation under control. However, Biden’s phrasing in that explanation is sloppy. In the past week alone, Biden has twice stated that inflation was 9% when he took office, compared to 1.4% when he took office.

White House officials say Mr. Biden’s point is that the ingredients for a 9% inflation rate in mid-2022 were already in place when he took office. In other words, increases in the prices of goods and services would have occurred no matter who was elected president in 2020.

national review torn apart Biden’s false claims:

One possibility is that Mr. Biden knows this is false, in order to mislead the public and make people associate high inflation with President Donald Trump’s term in office rather than with himself. This means that this is a deliberate effort.

Another possibility is that Biden misremembered the inflation rate when he took office, was told the claim was false, and then forgot the correct number. Special Counsel Robert Hur and others argued that Mr. Biden had a poor memory.

biden told Yahoo Finance Inflation “was 9% when I started,” he said, repeating a claim he made in one article. CNN interview Earlier this month (according to the Consumer Price Index, inflation was 1.4% year over year when Biden took office in January 2021).

of daily mail report:

In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Biden made false claims about soaring inflation during his time in office.

“I think inflation has gone up a little bit,” Biden said in an interview. He claimed, “When I joined the company, it was 9%, and now it’s down about 3%.”

As the United States emerges from the pandemic, inflation rose above 9% during the president’s term, but as of January 2021, when he first took office, inflation was below 2% (1.4% year-over-year).
