William Kristol’s Call to Abolish ICE Sparks Controversy
William Kristol, known for his strong opposition to Donald Trump and as a former supporter of President George W. Bush, has voiced his desire to dismantle the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. He argues that ICE plays a role in mass immigration, which he claims negatively impacts the nation and leads to lower wages.
On Monday, Kristol tweeted, “Abolish ICE. Now,” prompting a heated backlash from many Americans.
On Tuesday, Kristol celebrated the news that the Department of Homeland Security has paused the practice of detaining immigrants at vehicle stops following a second deadly incident involving an unauthorized driver.
If ICE is being truthful, we should not declare victory, but rather increase our efforts against the mass deportation system.
Kristol’s involvement in the establishment began in the early 2000s, reflecting pro-immigration and interventionist views that paralleled those of Bush’s administration. However, many Americans grew disenchanted with these policies, leading them to support Donald Trump, who advocated for stricter immigration control.
In response to pressure from Trump’s supporters, Kristol has shifted his stance, becoming more vocal about supporting alternative immigration as a means to enhance the economy and empower the government. For instance, he endorsed alternative immigration in early 2017 as a way to boost the economy.
Some argue that America thrives because, as John Adams suggested, in a capitalist society, hard work over generations leads to a degree of decadence. We’re fortunate to have waves of immigrants from countries like Italy, Ireland, Russia, and now Mexico, who are eager to work hard and strive for a better future for their families.
Despite his views, Kristol’s support for alternative immigration has not resonated well with many Republicans and swing voters, largely due to economic concerns. Consequently, Kristol and others from the Bulwark are increasingly finding common ground with pro-immigration Democrats.
