Major Drug Enforcement Operation in Skid Row
Federal and local law enforcement have initiated a significant joint operation, referred to as “Operation Save Skid Row,” targeting drug-related activities in Downtown Los Angeles and nearby residential areas.
This coordinated effort, which brought together federal agents and members of the Los Angeles Police Department, focused on executing numerous raids aimed at over two dozen suspected drug dealers believed to be exploiting the area’s vulnerable homeless population.
During the operation, law enforcement officials executed multiple search and arrest warrants in various locations, including private homes, temporary shelters, and makeshift encampments across a 50-block area in Skid Row and its surroundings. Authorities found that some suspects were masquerading as homeless individuals to seamlessly conduct open-air drug sales.
The large-scale operation resulted in significant confiscations of illegal substances, such as dangerously potent doses of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, alongside illegal firearms, luxury vehicles, and large amounts of cash presumed to have been earned through drug sales.
City officials and legal representatives have described this enforcement action as a crucial move toward dismantling the organized crime networks that profit from addiction and contribute to high rates of violence in Downtown Los Angeles.
They have stressed the importance of distinguishing between organized drug suppliers exploiting residents and the unhoused individuals struggling with addiction, assuring the public of plans to enhance access to treatment and shelter while rigorously prosecuting top-level distributors in the area.
“This is a historic operation. It’s the largest effort ever aimed at the drug dealers in Skid Row,” stated L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman during a press briefing.
“Our focus is not just on the street dealers, but also on mid-level distributors, and we want to trace back to where these drugs are coming from,” added LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell.
On this day, the operation led to the arrest of 23 out of 28 individuals charged with drug trafficking, specifically targeting fentanyl and methamphetamine in and around Skid Row.
