Trial Begins for Finnish Man Accused of Child Sexual Abuse

A Finnish man, accused of sexually abusing 361 children through social media, faced trial on Monday. This case is being described as the largest sexual crime case ever in Finland.

While authorities haven’t revealed his name, he is said to be in his late 20s. He allegedly used Snapchat to exploit hundreds of children from 2019 to 2022, most of whom remain unidentified. The confirmed victims include Finnish minors aged 9 to 15.

The trial commenced at Pirkanmaa District Court, where the man faces multiple charges, including aggravated sexual abuse of a child, sexual abuse of a child, and aggravated distribution of an indecent image of a child. According to Finnish public broadcaster Yle, the hearings are expected to continue until at least the end of 2026, following the initial session.

As reported, the accused allegedly posed as a woman named “Emilia” to solicit explicit images and videos from his victims online. In many cases, he instructed the children on what to do in these videos, using this strategy which has been seen in other abuse cases as well.

It’s believed that he was aware his victims were minors, either asking them directly or learning through other means. Prosecutors indicated that he knew some of the children from previous interactions, such as through sports while he worked as a junior Floorball coach or as a substitute teacher. Although his name isn’t public, Yle suggested he had previously played Floorball at a high league level in Finland.

Deputy Judge Jyri Kilpi, representing 77 plaintiffs, emphasized in court that the responsibility lies solely with the accused, not the victims. He noted that many victims feel shame regarding the incidents and have kept their experiences private, not sharing them with their parents. Kilpi mentioned that some parents also felt guilty for not monitoring their children’s online activities more closely.

The man was formally charged in early June and had partially admitted to his wrongdoing during several years of investigation by Finland’s police, which started in 2022 and was slated to conclude in December 2025. A search of his phone, related to a different case in 2022, uncovered a significant amount of sexually explicit material along with thousands of images and videos of unidentified children. Over the following years, local authorities worked diligently to identify more than 360 victims. The device containing this illicit content has since been destroyed by authorities.

Additionally, preliminary investigations indicated there may be many more victims than the 361 formally known. Recent estimates suggest that approximately 530 other unidentified victims exist, pushing the total number potentially affected to over 900.
