Friends of James Van Der Beek have established a GoFundMe in light of his tragic passing, stating that his family is currently facing financial difficulties.
The well-known “Dawson’s Creek” actor died on Wednesday after a battle with colorectal cancer that began in August 2023. A GoFundMe campaign was initiated on the same day, outlining how his wife, Kimberly, and their six children—Olivia, 14, Joshua, 13, Annabelle, 12, Emilia, eight, Gwendolyn, six, and Jeremiah, three—are now navigating an uncertain future.
“During this illness, the family did everything they could to support James and manage his care, which came with emotional and significant financial challenges,” the GoFundMe description indicates.
“In the aftermath of this tragedy, Kimberly and her children are facing an uncertain future. James’ healthcare expenses and prolonged struggle with cancer have left them financially strained. They are focused on helping their children continue their education while seeking some normalcy during this incredibly tough time.”
According to GoFundMe, the donations are intended to assist the family with essential living costs, bill payments, and educational support for the children.
Within just one hour of launching, over $42,000 had already been contributed.
Kimberly also shared the GoFundMe link on her Instagram Story.
“My friends have set this up to help support me and my kids during this difficult time. With both gratitude and sorrow,” she expressed.
In another post, Kimberly shared that her husband passed away peacefully Wednesday morning. “He faced his final days with courage, faith, and grace,” she mentioned. “There’s much to discuss regarding his wishes, his love for humanity, and the importance of time. That conversation will happen eventually. For now, we seek privacy as we mourn our beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Previously, in December, Van Der Beek auctioned off some “Dawson’s Creek” memorabilia, including his character’s outfit from the pilot and a necklace given to Katie Holmes’ character in a pivotal episode, to fund his cancer treatment. All the proceeds were aimed at alleviating the financial strain of the family’s battle against illness.
“I’ve kept these items for years, waiting for the right moment to share them, and given the unexpected challenges of late, it seems that now is the time,” he had shared about the decision. “Although there’s nostalgia in letting go of these pieces, I’m glad to offer them through the auction and share with those who have supported me throughout the years.”
