Gallup Poll: Living Costs Are the Main Financial Concern for Americans

Americans’ Biggest Financial Worry in 2026: The Cost of Living

A recent Gallup poll from April 2026 indicates that the cost of living remains the most pressing financial concern for many Americans.

The investigation revealed the four main financial challenges facing individuals today: high living expenses (inflation), rising energy costs (like oil and gas prices), the expense of owning or renting a home, and health care costs.

Specifically, 31% of respondents highlighted the cost of living as their primary concern. This marks a decrease from 41% in 2024 but is slightly higher than last year’s 29%. Back in 2020, just 3% cited it as their top issue.

Energy prices were noted as the biggest financial worry by 13% of participants, a slight rise from 12% the previous year. Additionally, another 13% pointed to the costs associated with owning or renting a home, which has surged significantly from 3% last April. Meanwhile, 8% mentioned health care expenses as their top concern, compared to 7% last year.

Other financial worries include:

  • Economic conditions and programs, including taxes (6%), economic status (2%), the stock market (2%), interest rates (2%), and social security (1%).
  • Lack of income, such as insufficient money or low wages (7%) and unemployment (4%).
  • Debt issues, with 6% stating they have too much debt overall and 1% specifically referencing credit card debt.
  • Worries about savings, with only 3% concerned about retirement savings and 2% about general savings.

The data aligns with the fact that over half of those surveyed (55%) reported experiencing financial hardship due to rising prices. Among them, 40% characterized their situation as moderately difficult, while 15% described it as “severe.”

Moreover, less than half of Americans—46%—rated their current financial health as good or excellent. In contrast, 35% considered their situation “fair,” and 19% regarded it as poor. Additionally, 55% expressed that their financial condition is deteriorating, whereas 34% feel it’s improving.

This survey, conducted from April 1 to 15, 2026, reflects a wider trend, as other studies also show inflation and rising prices as significant concerns among the American populace. Notably, this issue resonates across party lines, affecting Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike.
