Trump’s Comments on Iran Ignite Backlash from California Officials

In WASHINGTON, California Governor Gavin Newsom sharply criticized President Trump late Monday, labeling him as “deranged” after what seemed like a joke about Iran potentially “taking out” cities like Los Angeles or San Diego if it acquired nuclear weapons.

During a pre-midterm rally in Nebraska, Trump addressed rising gas prices, suggesting that the increase was a “small price to pay” to safeguard the U.S. from a nuclear-capable Iran.

He stated, “With the war, it’s just artificial. It’s a little bit high. It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe. For keeping our country safe. They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego.” He added, “This is a very small price to pay, and it’s going to be over with very soon.”

His remarks quickly sparked outrage among officials in California, who interpreted his words as granting Iran a sort of permission to attack America’s second and eighth most populous cities.

Newsom fired back on social media, saying, “After sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump is now saying our foreign enemies should ‘take out’ Los Angeles and San Diego. He is deranged and dangerous.”

His office also suggested that “The President is advocating for an attack on 10+ million U.S. residents in two of America’s largest cities,” insisting that “This is not normal. None of this is.”

In response, White House communications director Steven Cheung said on social media that the media’s reaction to Trump’s comments was disconnected from reality. He insisted that Trump was merely pointing out the risks posed to U.S. cities had nuclear threats from Iran not been addressed, emphasizing that America is safer now.

Trump’s relationship with California Democrats has been rocky over the years. In the past, he has openly criticized figures like LA Mayor Karen Bass and Newsom regarding recovery efforts after a devastating wildfire.

With Newsom potentially eyeing a presidential run in 2028, Trump has repeatedly mocked him, using the nickname “Newscum.”

Meanwhile, Bass called Trump’s comments “dangerous,” stating, “The role of a president is to protect the country, not to actively threaten it and encourage attacks on American lives.”

Xavier Becerra, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee in California, also condemned Trump’s statement, emphasizing that the lives of millions in LA and San Diego are not merely a “small price to pay” or fodder for jokes.

As the midterm elections loom, Trump has been ramping up his campaign efforts in traditionally Republican states. Democrats are expected to regain control of the House, while the Senate remains uncertain as election day approaches.

Trump boasted about his rally crowds on social media, claiming, “Nobody has ever seen anything like it. We are flipping races all over the place. The Dumocrats never counted on this.” He teased that a “Midterm Surprise” is on the way.
