California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) came under fire Thursday from journalists who disputed his claim that the California National Guard is stopping fentanyl and other illegal drugs at the border with Mexico.
Newsom claimed that California’s Democratic-run state government is actually guarding the border while Republicans are “playing games,” and posted a video of himself filmed near the border in which he mocked Republicans.
California has doubled the number of National Guard troops deployed to its border to stop the influx of fentanyl.

Democrats, who have embraced an open border throughout President Joe Biden’s term, are now blaming the border crisis on Republican opposition to a “border security” bill (which Republicans say would simply legalize currently illegal immigration).
Fox News correspondent Bill Melgin, who regularly reports from the border, pushed back against Newsom, saying he had not seen any California National Guard troops in the border areas where migrants were walking into the United States.
In Jacumba, the site of mass illegal border crossings of adult men from around the world, not a single California National Guard soldier was to be seen. BP is overwhelmed, and migrants are wandering the highways aimlessly, hailing their own Lyfts… https://t.co/cpvjGdlSo1

Melgin later got confirmation from his source, who said the California National Guard was only stationed at ports of entry.

While many drugs do enter the U.S. through ports of entry, illegal immigrants prefer to enter through different parts of the border.
Newsom photographed himself in a way that suggested he was in an open area rather than an official port of entry into the United States.
