Georgia high school shooting suspect’s mom defends her son in message to victims’ families

The mother of the 14-year-old boy who allegedly went on a shooting spree at a Winder, Georgia high school last week, killing four people, has apologized to the victims' families in an open letter, according to a new report.

“Our hearts go out to the parents and families of the victims of this tragic incident at Apalachee High School,” Marcy Gray, 43, Colt Gray's mother, wrote in a letter to the school. To CNN.

Just a week ago, Gray allegedly opened fire at the school, killing two students and two teachers. Police said seven other victims were shot and two suffered other injuries.

The victims were identified as Richard Aspinwall, 39, Christina Irimy, 53, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14 years old.

“If I could take Mason and Christian's place, I would do so without hesitation,” Marcy Gray wrote in the letter, adding that her “heart breaks for these two teachers who lost their lives in the line of their duty to teach and protect our children.”

Marcie Gray called a school counselor on the morning of Sept. 4, 2024, the day the shooting occurred, to alert authorities to concerning messages she had received from her son, she told ABC News in an interview published Tuesday.

She said the last message she received from her son was “I'm sorry, Mom,” and that his father received similar messages, including “I'm sorry” and “This isn't your fault.”

According to police and court records, Marcy Gray has a lengthy criminal history that includes drug use and property damage.

“We are living a nightmare right now and I will never forgive myself for what has happened,” she wrote in the new letter. “My son Colt is not a monster. He is my oldest child. He is quiet, thoughtful, caring, funny and very smart. Please pray for him and our family. I pray for you all every moment of every day.”

She could not immediately be reached for comment.

Colt Gray has been charged with four counts of felony murder, with more charges expected.

The boy's father, Collin Gray, 54, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of manslaughter and eight counts of child abuse.
