Giants president appeals to LGBTQ community in fan letter about Pride Night

Giants’ Pride Night Controversy Deepens

The situation surrounding the San Francisco Giants’ Pride Night is becoming increasingly complicated, especially following comments from team president and CEO Larry Baer. He recently appeared on local sports radio, where he seemingly offered an apology to the LGBTQ community, and on top of that, sent a letter to fans who expressed discontent after three Giants pitchers protested the event. These players displayed biblical verses on their Pride hats while another opted for a traditional orange cap.

In his letter, addressed directly to “our fans,” Baer acknowledged his inadequate initial reactions, stating, “On a night when we came together to celebrate inclusivity and belonging, we understand that it didn’t feel like that for many.” This might be true for a segment of the audience, but it seems he overlooked the perspectives of Christians, conservative fans, and the protesting players.

In this letter, Baer primarily seeks to appease LGBTQ advocates, dedicating several paragraphs to discuss the team’s commitment to this community. He pointed out, “I have been involved in the Giants’ support of the LGBTQ+ community since the ownership group’s inception.” While it’s true that the Giants have made strides in inclusivity over the years, one can’t help but question if this emphasis alienates other fan groups. A little irony there, isn’t it, Larry?

Baer highlighted the organization’s long-standing support, mentioning milestones like hosting HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and wearing Pride caps during games. However, despite the history, it’s evident that some fans feel overlooked. One lifelong Giants supporter remarked, “It seems like you’re focusing more on the louder, smaller community rather than reaching out to those of us who hold different beliefs.”

Baer expressed a desire to continue learning from the situation, stating, “We have begun conversations with members of the LGBTQ+ community.” But, what about dialogue with those from Christian or conservative backgrounds? It feels a bit one-sided, doesn’t it?

Furthermore, the Giants’ approach has ruffled feathers, particularly with their collaboration with a drag queen known as Peaches Christ, who took part in renewing vows for LGBTQ couples before the game. One has to wonder about the implications of this decision on their diverse fan base.

Broadcaster Mike Krukow weighed in on the backlash the organization received, suggesting the reactions were anticipated—not just from the LGBTQ community but also from their broader supporter base that values inclusivity in a different light. In that vein, he noted, “It’s your responsibility to know how sensitive this city is to the culture of freedom in how you live your life.”

Ultimately, Baer and the Giants need to recognize that true inclusion should encompass all viewpoints. By focusing heavily on one community, they risk excluding others—an ironic twist in their quest for belonging.
