Heat wave in France leads to restrictions on alcohol and new public safety measures

France Takes Action Amid Intense Heat Wave

France has implemented a ban on drinking in certain public areas and is limiting outdoor gatherings as a severe heat wave affects Europe, according to reports.

Both tourists and locals are finding themselves resorting to extreme—sometimes unsafe—measures to stay cool, like jumping into canals and soaking in public fountains.

In response to soaring temperatures nearing triple digits, French authorities have enforced restrictions on alcohol consumption in public and during major events. Health experts are cautioning that drinking in such extreme heat can exacerbate dehydration and other health issues.

With Paris witnessing a surge in visitors, it has turned from a popular vacation destination into an overcrowded situation, as noted. Many police and emergency workers have been deployed, particularly during music festivals and similar festivities.

As the oppressive heat continues, safety measures are being intensified. Many regions in France are under red heat warnings, and temperatures might surpass 104 degrees in some areas.

Images show people crowding around public fountains and wading into shallow pools, desperately seeking relief.

In Paris, people flocked to Canal Saint-Martin, with some daring jumps from bridges into the water, illustrating the lengths to which folks are going to cool off.

Officials are advising everyone to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day, keep hydrated, and look after neighbors who might be at risk.

The Les Collet basin on Canal Saint-Martin has been opened to provide a safe space for locals and visitors to cool down. Set to open on June 17, this area will be staffed by lifeguards, as reported by a local newspaper. Authorities are cautioning against the dangers of swimming outside designated areas.

Tragically, drownings related to the heat wave have been reported throughout Europe. Heartbreaking stories have emerged, including a father warning families about the risks kids face near rivers and lakes, following several drownings in the UK.

In Germany, for instance, a man drowned in the Rhine River, while there are several others reported missing.

The heat wave is severely disrupting daily life across Europe. In France, various trains, concerts, and sports events have been canceled as authorities continue to urge people to stay hydrated.

At landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, mist stations have been set up in an effort to assist with crowd control.

Meanwhile, in Rome, tourists are dipping into the city’s renowned fountains to escape the heat, while others are seeking shade with parasols during events like Milan Fashion Week.

A report from the World Health Organization’s European office highlighted that over 200,000 people have died from heat-related causes across Europe in the last four years.
