New York Republican lawmakers are calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul to call the Manhattan District Attorney after several immigrants accused of mobbing two NYPD officers in the Times Square attack were released without bail. We are calling for Alvin Bragg to be fired.
State Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortto and 11 other senators called the clash the latest in a long line of alleged failures by leftist prosecutors and called for Democratic Gov. Can Bragg to take office. requested.
“He runs a public defender’s office out of the district attorney’s office,” Ort told reporters Tuesday.
“Mr. Bragg’s unconscionable response to the recent attack on two NYPD officers by a group of immigrants outside a shelter in Times Square must be the final straw,” the letter sent Tuesday said. it is written like this. “The public safety of New Yorkers is clearly at risk.”
Late last month, a group of immigrants was caught on camera attacking two New York City police officers. Several of those involved were soon arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer, but were released without bail. Several of them then fled the state to California, officials previously told the Post.
“We are past the time to act,” said Suffolk County Republican Sen. Dean Murray. “It’s time for her to fire Alvin Bragg. From the moment he took office, he was choosing which laws to enforce, which criminals to go after, and which criminals not to go after.”
Although New York state’s bail laws have been widely criticized as being too lenient, assaulting a police officer is a bailable crime.
Bragg’s office said at the time that it was further reviewing camera footage of the attack to determine the involvement of various suspects and appropriate charges, and has since taken a harder line.
A spokesperson for Bragg’s office told the Post that the police department and police chief will work this weekend to “confirm the identity, prove the case, and hold those responsible accountable.” He said he said he was cooperating with police.
“Since Attorney General Bragg took office, shootings and homicides in Manhattan have decreased by 38% and 23%, while gun prosecutions have increased by 20%,” the spokesperson said. “We welcome collaboration with signatories on public safety initiatives, including strengthening hate crime and sexual crimes laws and investing in mental health initiatives that prevent crime and save lives.”
Although Hochul did not mention Bragg by name, he criticized the handling of the attack and called for the immigrants involved to be deported.
“They want to make sure the right people are involved, but they can detain these people while it’s still an investigation,” Hochul told MSNBC on Tuesday. “You don’t let them out. You ask for bail, the judge grants it, and then you hold people until you know exactly what happened.”
“If Governor Hochul really believes that these people should have been deported, then he should fire Alvin Bragg, he should be removed from office, because he is the person we expect from a district attorney. Because they’re not doing their jobs,” Ortto said.
Republicans are campaigning on Mr. Bragg’s refusal to seek prison terms for a series of crimes or downplaying some felonies. During the 2022 campaign to oust Hochul, then-Long Island Congressman Lee Zeldin frequently targeted Bragg and vowed to remove him from office.
