New Charges for Suspect in Train Stabbing Incident
A man accused of fatally stabbing his great-grandmother, Margaret Swan, in a violent attack on an Atlanta train is now facing federal charges that could lead to the death penalty.
John Elijah Matthews, 25, is charged with assault resulting in death during public transportation after he allegedly slashed the 66-year-old woman’s throat and stabbed her nearly 20 times aboard the Atlanta Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority system on Saturday morning.
Hailing from Decatur, Georgia, Matthews could be facing life in prison or even the death penalty if found guilty of these new charges, as announced by federal officials. This comes in addition to the felony murder charge he’s already facing in Fulton County.
U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg stated, “Margaret Swann was a beloved great-grandmother who was brutally murdered in an unprovoked and wanton act of violence.” He added that her death profoundly affected her family and the community, insisting that violent acts on MARTA would not be tolerated.
The chilling incident was captured on surveillance footage, which reportedly shows Swann sitting alone on a train, looking at her phone when Matthews suddenly approached her, pulled out a knife, and began attacking her.
According to witnesses, Swann, who was a mother of three, grandmother of five, and great-grandmother of four, struggled to defend herself as other passengers fled the train to call for help.
Her daughter, Shanae Sams, expressed her heartbreak, criticizing local officials for temporarily allowing free access to the transit system during an overhaul in prep for the FIFA World Cup. “This situation could have been prevented,” she said.
Authorities noted that Matthews had not interacted with Swann before the attack, which left her dead in a pool of blood on the train. He was subdued by MARTA officers at the Oakland City Station while still holding a bloody knife.
FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Marlo Graham remarked, “Margaret Swann is an innocent woman who was just trying to reach her destination. We hope these charges will bring justice to her and her family.” He emphasized the need for a safe mass transit system in Atlanta.
Currently, Matthews is being held at the Fulton County Jail.
