Ibraheem Samirah, Virginia Democrat Who Interrupted Trump’s Speech, Sentenced for COVID Fraud Case

A former state representative from Virginia, who gained attention in July 2019 for interrupting President Donald Trump’s address, is now facing charges for allegedly fraudulently obtaining COVID-19 relief funds intended to support struggling business owners during the pandemic.

Identified as 34-year-old Ibraheem Samira (D-VA), he is currently serving a three-year suspended sentence and must repay around $89,000 after his sentencing on October 30, according to WRIC.

In a notable incident during President Trump’s speech at the Virginia Statehouse, Samira stood up, holding a sign that read, “Go back to your rotten homeland” and “Expel the hate.”

At the time, Trump was marking the 400th anniversary of the U.S. Congress of Representative Legislative Bodies, which made Samira’s interruption even more disruptive.

Earlier this year, Samira had won a special election to represent a northern Virginia district that includes Loudoun and Fairfax counties. He commented that he believed voters would prefer him to protest rather than “passively accept” the President’s presence at a historic event.

WRIC highlighted that the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funds were designated for specific business-related expenses.

The report detailed:

Samira was involved in a “scheme to defraud SonaBank and the SBA.” This included making materially false statements regarding the NHS and presenting fabricated IRS tax and payroll documents.

In May 2020, Samira applied for a loan on behalf of a company called Nova Healthy Smiles (NHS), which was registered at his address.

The Democratic representative was approved for an $83,000 PPP loan from SonaBank. He also filled out a loan application, claiming to be the main contact and falsely stating that there were four employees associated with NHS.

He additionally claimed that his monthly salary exceeded $33,000.

According to court documents, Samira “falsely stated” that NHS had paid the salaries of four employees in January and February 2020, despite the fact that no payroll records were available for that period until May 2020.

Samira is not the only individual facing scrutiny for fraud related to COVID-19 relief funds.

Reports from Breitbart News indicate that in 2023, estimates from various governmental departments revealed that around $276 billion intended for “COVID-19 relief funds” was lost to “fraud” and “waste.”

Additionally, it was reported in September 2024 that a Maryland pastor had been sentenced to over $3.5 million in prison for COVID-19 relief fraud.
