Illinois Governor Pritzker turns down Trump's National Guard proposal for Chicago

Concerns Over Potential National Guard Deployment in Chicago

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker recently stated that there is no emergency prompting a need for federal intervention in Chicago, while President Donald Trump has accused the governor of “trying to manufacture a crisis.” This statement follows reports suggesting the federal government might deploy the National Guard in Chicago to address crime in the city.

Pritzker noted, “At this time, Illinois has not received any requests or outreach from the federal government asking if they need assistance or have no requests for federal intervention,” emphasizing the lack of immediate need for military presence.

This conversation comes on the heels of Trump’s moves to increase the federal law enforcement presence in Washington, D.C., where hundreds of agents and National Guard members have already been deployed to combat crime. Now, Chicago seems to be the next target of Trump’s administration’s controversial approach to crime reduction.

According to reports from the Washington Post, the Pentagon has been planning a military deployment to Chicago for weeks. This could involve mobilizing thousands of National Guard troops as early as next month.

Pritzker reaffirmed his commitment to the safety of Illinois residents, asserting that there is no justification for deploying National Guard troops from other states or active duty military to the state’s borders. The governor accused Trump of trying to create a crisis to distract from broader issues affecting working families.

Moreover, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson labeled the proposed deployment of National Guard troops as “uncoordinated, meaningless, unhealthy.” He expressed concern that such actions could escalate tensions between residents and law enforcement, which, he argues, would undermine community trust essential for safety.

Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton remarked that Trump’s plans appear to be driven by a desire for political gain, citing evidence of a decline in crime in Chicago under recent reforms. “There is absolutely no rationale for this decision other than distracting from the harm Trump is causing,” she said, underscoring the strides the state has made in reforming the criminal justice system.

Johnson also provided data showing significant reductions in murders, robberies, and shootings in the past year, which he believes further supports the case against deploying the National Guard in the city.
