Iran’s Military Responds to US Threats Amid Protests
Iran’s military leader has issued a warning about taking pre-emptive actions against perceived threats to the nation, particularly in light of ongoing protests. Major General Amir Khatami’s remarks come after President Trump indicated a potential US response if Iranian forces resort to violence against demonstrators.
Recently, Trump stated that the US would intervene should it witness any abuses or violence directed at Iranian protesters. He emphasized, “If Iran shoots…and if they violently kill peaceful protesters, which is their habit, the United States will come to their aid. We are locked, loaded, and ready to go.”
These remarks from Trump resonate strongly with Iran, especially following the US intervention in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
Khatami, in a speech addressing military academy students, expressed that the Iranian government perceives the escalating rhetoric against it as a serious threat, stating that Iran would not remain passive. He claimed, “I can confidently say that the readiness of the Iranian military today is much higher than before the war. If the enemy makes a mistake, he will face a more decisive response. We will cut off the hands of any aggressor.”
The unrest within Iran has been fueled by economic hardships, leading to riots. The regime feels particularly vulnerable to criticism from both the United States and Israel concerning its treatment of protesters.
In response to the turmoil, the Iranian government has initiated a subsidy plan to help its citizens cope with rising food prices, providing around $7 a month to over 71 million people. Reports indicate that prices for essential goods, including cooking oil and chicken, could see substantial increases due to currency devaluation.
Mohammad Jafar Gampana, the vice president for administrative affairs, commented on the situation, referring to it as a “full-scale economic war” and calling for significant reforms to eliminate corruption.
The protests, which started late last month, show no signs of abating. Activists from the National Council of Resistance of Iran have claimed that the cities of Abdanan and Malekshahi are currently under the control of protesters.
