Democratic strategist James Carville expressed his frustration on Friday with major television networks for not airing President Donald Trump’s speech on election integrity in full. He believes that Americans should have the chance to see what he terms the president’s increasingly erratic behavior.
When asked how Democrats might react to Trump’s prime-time address, Carville suggested on CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that they should criticize networks like CNN, ABC, and NBC for their lack of coverage. “The actions of the president of the United States are more newsworthy than his tone,” he stated.
Carville pointed out that the networks missed a valuable opportunity for voters to evaluate Trump’s remarks directly, arguing that viewing the speech wouldn’t boost the president’s political standing but rather heighten concerns about his actions.
Blitzer sought clarification from Carville, asking if he meant that the media should promote Trump more. Carville affirmed this, reiterating that the decision by CNN or other networks not to broadcast the speech didn’t seem particularly newsworthy to him.
He raised concerns over Trump’s disregard for advice from his staff to refrain from “crazy” behavior, referencing articles he had read in sources like The Daily Beast and Politico.
Carville stated, “Of course, he didn’t definitely take that advice,” but insisted that the situation is indeed newsworthy and that exposing more people to this could clarify the matter.
His comments followed Trump’s address on Thursday night, where he reiterated claims about election integrity, alleging that China attempted to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election—an assertion denied by Beijing. Trump, however, did not claim that China changed any vote counts but suggested that the country ran an influence campaign targeting American public perception.
The president leveraged this speech to pressure Congress into passing the SAVE America Act, using newly released information as justification for stricter federal election rules ahead of the midterms. This bill successfully passed the House in February but has since stalled in the Senate.
While CBS News provided analysis shortly after the start of Trump’s speech and aired a special report featuring his criticisms of ABC and NBC, other networks took varying approaches to broadcasting his address. Fox News, notably, reported the speech in its entirety.
