On his show Wednesday night, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel expressed his disbelief over Spencer Pratt’s surprising performance in the Los Angeles mayoral primary, calling it “insane.” He also recognized a certain, albeit quiet, backing from Democrats for the unconventional candidate.
Kimmel, during his opening monologue, remarked that voters in L.A. must be feeling baffled that Pratt managed to secure second place and is now set to compete against incumbent Democratic Mayor Karen Bass in the upcoming general election. “I mean, can you believe it?” he said. “It’s like a plot twist in a really strange movie.”
“Unless something unexpected occurs with the voting results,” he continued, “it seems likely that Mayor Bass will head to a runoff with a former reality TV villain. Sixty percent of the votes have already been tallied. So, I guess, come November, L.A. residents could be faced with choosing between a woman named Karen and a man named Karen.”
Kimmel highlighted the slow counting process in California, suggesting it might take some time for Democrats to uncover which of them might have voted for Pratt. “We are, well, let’s just say, somewhat embarrassed. I don’t think he should be one of the top two candidates for mayor,” he added.
He humorously noted, “Pratt should be DJing the most dubious New Year’s Eve party in Reno right now. Winning seems unlikely for him, yet he’s already busy filming a reality show centered around his mayoral campaign. So, I guess he’s definitely focused.”
As of Thursday, Pratt and Bass maintained their positions as the top two contenders, with Bass securing 35% of the votes and Pratt closely following with around 30%. Far-left Council member Nithya Raman trailed behind with just under 23%.
This preliminary count has all but confirmed Bass’s advancement to the November runoff. Another update on the vote count is anticipated later in the day, with the official certification of the primary results scheduled for June 26th.
