Joy Behar Incorrectly Believes Virginia AG Candidate Imagines Harm Coming to Rival's Children is a Republican

Joy Behar’s Assumptions on Political Controversy

On Thursday, Joy Behar, a co-host of “The View,” quickly speculated that a candidate who made violent remarks about his political rival’s family was a Republican.

Text messages from Jay Jones, a Democratic candidate for Virginia’s attorney general, surfaced in 2022. In these messages, Jones expressed a desire to shoot former Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert and suggested that Gilbert’s wife should hold their deceased children. Behar mistakenly claimed that Republicans had not condemned Jones’ statements, which led her co-hosts to set the record straight.

“It was only the Democratic Party that condemned it,” Behar incorrectly stated, adding, “There are no Republicans.” However, co-host Alyssa Farrar Griffin quickly corrected her, pointing out, “He’s a Democrat.”

Despite Behar’s insistence that Democrats were the only ones condemning Jones, many within the party seemed reluctant to call for his withdrawal from the race. Abigail Spanberger, a Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Virginia, stated she condemned Jones’ comments but avoided clearly saying whether she would continue to support him. Similarly, Democratic Senator Tim Kaine mentioned that he has known Jones for years and intends to support him.

In a joint statement, Kaine and Senator Mark Warner emphasized that defeating Donald Trump and Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares was more pressing than the controversy surrounding Jones. Nancy Pelosi also dodged questions on whether Jones should step down or if he was suitable for the attorney general position during a CNN appearance.

Miyares responded on “America’s Newsroom,” asserting that Jones apologized for his comments only after being arrested. He asserted that the attorney general should be the best prosecutor for all Virginians, suggesting that Jones was not qualified for the role.

The Virginia attorney general also remarked that Jones seemed unrepentant about his comments, reflecting a lack of remorse from the other party.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, a Republican, called for Jones to exit the race, labeling his comments as “beyond disqualifying.”
