Joy Reid accuses White Christian Iowans of wanting to have people of color ‘bow’ to them

MSNBC host Joy Reid on Monday criticized “white Christians” who support former President Trump following his victory in the Iowa caucuses.

When the results came in, Reed told the host panel that he wanted to discuss specific data points regarding “white Christians.” He was discussing that data point with Robert Robbie Jones, director and founder of the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI). Author of “The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy.”

She said he told her that Iowa is about 61% white Christian, compared to about 41% of the entire state.

She asked why this particular demographic supports Trump despite his history of electoral defeat, saying, “They see themselves as the rightful inheritors of this country, and Trump is 'I promise to give them back the money,''' read Jones' response.

Expanding further, Reed told his co-hosts: “All the things we think about, like what people are betting on in terms of the chances of an election, but we believe that God gave you this country and this country is yours. That doesn't matter.'' “Everyone who isn't a white, conservative Christian is a fraud American, not a real American. You don’t care. You care about what God has given you.”

Later in the show, she argued that this ideology cannot be separated from religious ties.

“It’s a religion,” she said. “And I think what we really have to face, and this is what the Democratic Party is going to face, is that this is now white evangelicalism. It's Christian nationalism. It's That’s the name, right?”

She went on to say that “white evangelical Christians with a certain mindset” “own this country, are immigrants, are brown people, and Hindus like Vivek Ramaswamy and his wife are illegitimate.” “I consider myself an American,” he reiterated earlier rhetoric from his conversation with Jones. No more legitimate Americans than they are. ”

She added: “They are not trying to persuade and convince people through politics. What they are saying is, 'This country is ours and everyone will bow down to us.' That's what I mean.''
