An emergency room physician in San Diego is required to undergo drug and alcohol testing after being reported for displaying signs that hindered her ability to provide care, including slurred speech.
The Medical Board of California has filed a complaint against Dr. Ariana Dillman, a physician from Solana Beach, citing “behavior consistent with intoxication,” which includes slurred speech and drooping eyelids, among other erratic actions, while she was on duty.
Despite these serious allegations, Dr. Dillman is still permitted to care for patients, but only under stringent supervision. She now has to participate in unannounced drug and alcohol testing, attend support groups, and refrain from using controlled substances.
Reportedly, the situation escalated in June when Dillman declined to take an immediate drug test after showing concerning behavior.
The commission has stated that she allegedly “used controlled substances, dangerous drugs, or alcoholic beverages” in a way that could affect her ability to practice safely. Following the incident, her employer suspended her privileges, and a psychiatrist later diagnosed her with alcohol use disorder, according to state records.
Simultaneously, Dillman’s name has recently surfaced on the staff list at Karma Massage & Spa, a well-known venue offering beauty procedures like Botox and facial fillers.
Michelle Montserrat Ramos, a patient advocate with Consumer Watchdog, remarked, “Unfortunately, there are many similar cases occurring throughout the state,” emphasizing the need for stronger regulations for doctors who practice under the influence.
