Breaking records in the NBA has become a tradition for the James family.
On October 6, 2024, during a Lakers preseason game, LeBron James and Bronny James made history as the first father-son pairing to play in an NBA game. This moment was solidified a few weeks later on October 22, 2024, in the Lakers’ regular-season opener against the Timberwolves.
In a notable assist during a March 27 game against the Nets, LeBron passed to Bronny for a three-pointer, marking a significant moment for the duo.
Then, on Saturday, both players took the court together in a playoff game for the first time as the Lakers faced off against the Rockets in Game 1 of their first-round series at Crypto.com Arena. This moment added yet another layer to their historic journey.
“This year has been pretty wild for me,” LeBron shared. “Having the chance to play with my son in such an important game—it’s probably one of the most incredible things I’ve experienced. My whole family was there too, including his brother, sister, mother, and grandmother. That’s just… wow. It’s a rare opportunity for a mother to see her son and grandson play in the playoffs.”
Bronny had his playoff debut last year but saw only limited playtime during two games as the Lakers were swept by the Timberwolves in the first round.
On Saturday night, with key players Luka Doncic and Austin Reeves sidelined due to injuries, Bronny was brought into the rotation. He joined his father, Jake LaRavia, Jared Vanderbilt, and Jackson Hayes on the court in the second quarter.
He faced some challenges, getting two fouls and a turnover within just a few minutes. This was only his third NBA playoff game, although it was LeBron’s 293rd, which ties him for a record.
LeBron posted a strong performance with 19 points, 13 assists, eight rebounds, two steals, and one block in 38 minutes of action.
When asked if he had any advice for Bronny, LeBron mentioned the nerves that come with playoff games. “Everyone prepared this week, including Bronny,” he said. “But that first playoff game? It’s nerve-wracking. You try to prepare as best you can, but once you’re on that floor, it’s about feeling it out. I remember my first playoff game back in 2006. I was so nervous, but once I settled in, it was fine. I think he’ll find his rhythm in no time.”
Looking ahead, Game 2 between the Lakers and the Rockets is slated for Tuesday night in Los Angeles.
