On Wednesday, a Long Island detective called a telephone service worker using the “N-word” and yelled a racist tirade, saying, “We don't want you and your kind in our neighborhood,” officials said. He was charged with a hate crime after allegedly vomiting.
Rockville Center Detective John Murphy, 40, arrested a black cell phone service subcontractor in his SUV near Sylvan Court and Weeks Avenue in the Manorville neighborhood on Nov. 3 at about 7 p.m. He is said to have become enraged with hatred after finding out.
Murphy allegedly attacked the 48-year-old worker, yelling at him to “get out of here”. According to the criminal complaint, we don't want you or your kind living in our neighborhood.
According to court documents, the hateful detective kicked the victim's SUV, ripped off a light mounted on the top of the car, then smashed it into pieces and threw it at the victim, hitting him on the left side of his face.
Shortly before the violent altercation, Murphy, who was off-duty at the time, allegedly asked the victim what he was doing in the neighborhood, identifying himself as law enforcement.
Police said when the worker tried to hand over his identification, Murphy refused to look at it.
Murphy, of Manorville, was slapped with criminal mischief and aggravated harassment as a hate crime.
He ignored reporters' questions after his court appearance Wednesday.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney condemned Murphy's alleged bigoted attack.
“The victim was simply trying to do her job when the defendant allegedly harassed her and damaged her vehicle,” Tierney said in a statement.
“What's worse, the defendants are sworn law enforcement officers who have a responsibility to protect the rights of citizens, not violate them as alleged here.”
Murphy is scheduled to return to court on December 3 and was ordered to stay away from the victim.
Rockville Center police suspended Murphy Wednesday morning. According to Newsday.
