Los Angeles Mayor’s Controversial Remarks on Recent Riots

At a press conference on Wednesday, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass suggested that the recent riots in the city were “provoked by the White House.” She implied that this situation may be a part of a larger national experiment aimed at assessing the extent of federal power over local jurisdictions.

Bass mentioned that local officials were initially informed that the federal government was targeting individuals with violent felonies, gang affiliations, and drug-related crimes. However, she alleged that federal agents were separating families and employing armored vehicles on the streets.

These comments followed a weekend that saw protests against immigration enforcement escalate into violence, prompting President Donald Trump to send 2,000 National Guard troops and at least 500 Marines to the area.

This week, local officials instituted nightly curfews and reported numerous arrests after widespread destruction was inflicted upon businesses and violence directed at police forces.

“This situation was caused by the White House,” Bass stated. She speculated on their motives, suggesting it may be about testing whether the federal government could take control over local governance. Bass expressed that the federal approach seemed more aimed at instilling fear rather than ensuring safety.

Interestingly, during her press conference, she refrained from criticizing the violent riots, framing her focus instead on broader implications.

In response to her remarks, the White House pointed out that Bass has essentially suggested that peace won’t return to Los Angeles until the Trump administration halts enforcement of immigration laws, particularly regarding the removal of violent offenders. This response reflected growing tensions and discord over the situation.

During the same press conference, several mayors from surrounding areas expressed their agreement with Bass’s stance. El Monte’s Mayor Jessica Ancona voiced a strong desire for National Guard presence, saying the military should be localized and advocating for the removal of federal immigration enforcement from the city.

Other officials echoed these sentiments. Huntington Park Mayor Arturo Flores, for instance, criticized the Trump administration’s actions as unconstitutional, stating that these so-called “foreigners” are, in fact, Americans. He emphasized their oath to protect the Constitution was for the American people, not any dictatorial regime.

Bass further questioned the role of the military, mentioning that Marines are trained for combat overseas, not for domestic situations where their authority might be limited.

In the face of ongoing unrest, Mayor Peggy Lemons from Paramount announced plans to establish a special fund aimed at assisting local immigrant families financially, underlining a community-focused approach amid escalating tensions.

Responses from the White House and the Department of Defense were not immediately available, leaving many questions about the future direction of actions being taken in Los Angeles.
