Macron Urges Immediate U.N. Security Council Meeting on Iran Attacks

European Leaders Respond to U.S. Actions Against Iran

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an “urgent meeting” of the United Nations Security Council. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed on Saturday that Madrid is opposed to the attack by the United States and Israel on Iran’s Islamic regime.

Given Europe’s heightened vulnerability to the region’s instability, reactions have been a mix of concern and condemnation regarding President Donald Trump’s decision to initiate a significant military operation against Iran.

While the European Union urged “restraint,” Macron adopted a more critical position. He stated that the conflict “must stop” and called for renewed negotiations with the Iranian government led by the Ayatollah.

He emphasized that “the outbreak of war between the United States, Israel, and Iran carries serious consequences for international peace and security.” Further addressing the escalation, Macron said it’s perilous for everyone involved and needs to come to an end. He argued that the Iranian regime must realize it has no option but to engage in genuine negotiations to halt its nuclear and ballistic pursuits, as well as its regional destabilizing actions. This, he noted, is vital for the security of all in the Middle East.

Macron also mentioned that the Iranian people should have the freedom to envision their future, criticizing the Islamic regime for its actions. He said it’s crucial “to restore the voice of our people” in Iran.

The French leader requested an “urgent session” of the UN Security Council, reflecting his nation’s principles and international responsibilities. Interestingly, Macron indicated that France is “ready” to commit resources for the protection of its closest allies if requested, hinting at potential support for the U.S.

On a different note, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez took a firmer stance against Washington. He publicly “rejected” the “unilateral military action by the United States and Israel,” characterizing it as an “escalation that disrupts the international order.”

Sánchez also denounced the Iranian regime and its Revolutionary Guards, stating that another prolonged conflict in the Middle East is untenable. He called for immediate de-escalation and adherence to international law, underscoring the need for renewed dialogue to achieve a lasting political solution in the region.

In contrast to Europe’s stance, allies from the Anglosphere, like Australia and Canada, voiced their support for the United States and the actions taken against Iran.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that his country backs the U.S. in its efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and to maintain international peace. He added that Tehran’s regime has long been a “destabilizing force” through its violent actions.

Similarly, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, despite his past criticisms of Trump, affirmed that Canada supports U.S. efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He reiterated that Iran is a significant source of instability and a poor human rights record, stressing it must not be allowed to develop nuclear capabilities.
