Majority of U.S. Voters Back Trump’s Immigration Crackdown

A recent poll indicates that most American voters support President Donald Trump’s approach to tackling illegal immigration. This survey, conducted by Plymouth Union Public Survey, reflects reactions to the president’s initiatives and the media’s portrayal of them.

Despite attempts by media outlets and the Democratic Party to criticize Trump’s immigration policies, public support appears to be robust. The poll reveals that 74% of respondents consider the fight against illegal immigration a key issue for both the president and Congress. Specifically, 44% categorize it as “very important,” in stark contrast to the mere 7% who deem it “not important at all.”

Interestingly, even among those who have strongly opposed ICE in recent times, such as Democrats (58%) and voters supporting Kamala Harris (59%), there is significant acknowledgment of the issue’s importance.

The findings also indicate that 57% of likely voters agree with the president’s immigration strategies, particularly his border and national security measures, which include:

  • 78% asserting that the U.S. Bureau of Statistics should target international drug traffickers and cartel activities before they enter the country.
  • 64% believing that Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro should face trial in the U.S. for his alleged drug trafficking involvement.
  • 51% supporting the use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to tackle illegal immigration.
  • 57% think ICE officers deserve to perform their duties without facing interference or harassment.
  • 58% feel that ICE members risk their safety to protect the nation, and it is wrong to attack them while they are on duty.

Conversely, only 30% of voters advocate for political organizations that financially support protests meant to disrupt or intimidate ICE agents. Among these, 55% identify as “very liberal,” and 46% are younger voters under 30.

The voting memo emphasizes that the general consensus is that illegal immigration is a pressing issue and that Trump’s strategies are effectively addressing it. There’s a clear public endorsement of the current enforcement approach, especially regarding actions against cartels and accountability for foreign involvement. Support also flows toward ICE officers who carry out these policies.

The memo concludes that voters respect the service of ICE and underscore the importance of allowing officers to perform their roles freely. In contrast, organized efforts to hinder enforcement seem to resonate with only a small, vocal segment of the electorate. Overall, public sentiment largely aligns with a pro-ICE, America First position on illegal immigration.

The poll surveyed 1,000 likely general election voters nationwide, conducted from January 16 to 18, and carries a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
