Details Emerge About Fatal Stabbing in Brooklyn Deli
Authorities have identified the suspect in the fatal stabbing of a deli worker in Brooklyn, a man with a lengthy criminal history. Oneil Millise, 42, has been linked to the incident involving Diego Sandoval Nava on August 1st at the Deli & Mini Market located at Hegemann and Van Siclen Avenue.
Surveillance footage shows Millise wearing a dark, long-sleeved shirt with blue and white stripes. Eyewitnesses recounted that he entered the deli requesting a single cigarette, but the clerk, unfamiliar with him, declined the sale. It seems he had concerns about getting into trouble for selling “loose” cigarettes, which is illegal in New York City.
The situation escalated when Millise threw a credit card machine at the clerk and issued threats, infuriated by the clerk’s reluctance. Witnesses noted that Nava, a father of three, attempted to intervene during this confrontation.
As Nava stepped in to diffuse the situation, the altercation escalated into a physical fight, resulting in multiple stab wounds to his torso. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center.
According to colleagues, Nava had been a valued employee at Corner Deli for at least six months. His friends remembered him as a generous figure who often covered the cost of sandwiches for kids in need, trusting they would repay him.
As of Wednesday, Millise remained on the run, prompting authorities to release a mug shot featuring him in a black hoodie. His criminal background includes numerous arrests, with previous charges dating back to 2014, where he was involved in another violent incident.
Initially, he faced attempted murder charges, but it appears he later accepted a plea deal for second-degree attempted assault, gaining a conditional discharge instead. His rap sheet also reflects additional violations, including being caught with a weapon and driving without a license.
If you have any information about Millise’s whereabouts, you’re encouraged to contact the NYPD Crime Stopper Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or 1-888-57-Pista (74782) for Spanish speakers. Tips can also be submitted through the Crime Stoppers website.
