Man charged in ‘Texas Killing Fields’ case as victim’s father reveals prior encounter

Suspect charged and taken into custody 40 years after the Texas Killing Fields murders

Texas Killing Fields Cold Case Developments

The father of a victim in the Texas Killing Fields cold case discovered that he had encountered the recently indicted suspect several times before the arrest, without realizing it.

James Dolphus Elmore Jr., aged 61, faces charges of felony manslaughter and tampering with evidence related to the death of Galveston County District Attorney Laura Miller. He is also charged with tampering in connection with the murder of Audrey Cook.

Tim Miller, Laura Miller’s father and the founder of Texas ExU Search, revealed he had met Elmore around 20 to 30 times over the past four years.

“We probably met 20, 30 times,” Miller stated to reporters, as noted by a local newspaper.

Miller, whose 16-year-old daughter was one of the victims found in the area designated as the “Texas Killing Fields,” mentioned that Elmore frequently approached him to discuss the case.

“He reached out to me,” Miller said, speculating on why he did so.

During their conversations, Elmore shared details about some lesser-known murders, which seemed to have some private elements.

“He knew things,” Miller observed, adding that some information felt surprisingly intimate.

At the time of their meetings, Miller admitted he didn’t suspect Elmore’s involvement in any wrongdoing.

“I don’t believe this guy was involved,” he reflected. “You think there’s someone you want to help.” However, following recent indictments, those initial conversations took on a new significance.

“Looking back now, I think it’s amazing,” Miller remarked, questioning whether Elmore had revealed more than he realized.

“I trusted him,” he added, indicating a sense of disbelief regarding the situation.

These charges relate to the notorious “Texas Killing Fields” cases, where around 30 women and girls’ bodies—like those of Audrey Cook and Laura Miller—were discovered near Calder Road in League City from the 1970s to the 1990s. Authorities have been investigating for decades in an effort to find those responsible.

In 2024, the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office reopened the case. Additionally, William Reese pleaded guilty in 2022 to murders linked to Laura Smither, Kelly Cox, and Jessica Cain.

Elmore was arrested on Tuesday night, and reports indicate that bail was denied.
