Cincinnati Mayoral Candidate Blames Police Funding Mismanagement for Violence

Cincinnati – Following a violent incident that caught widespread attention in downtown Cincinnati, a mayoral candidate is pointing to mismanagement of police funding as a significant factor affecting community safety.

At a press conference held shortly after the attack, Mayor Aftab Pureval condemned the violence and promised to track down the culprit responsible for the assault. “This is an awful situation,” Pureval stated. He emphasized that local law enforcement is working diligently to ensure justice. “Let’s be clear. There’s no room for violent crime here, whether it’s brawls or gun-related incidents. We are on the hunt for the individual behind this.”

Cincinnati Brawl: A Timeline of Events

Authorities spent several days locating six suspects who were charged, with the final arrests occurring over a week after the video of the brawl spread online.

Those arrested include Patrick Rosemond, 38, Jermaine Matthews, 39, Montian Meriweather, 34, Dekira Vernon, 24, Dominique Kittle, 37, and Aisha Devarn, 25. They face various charges related to the violent encounter that left several individuals injured.

Following the incident, criticism arose regarding public safety management in Cincinnati. It was noted that only 11 police officers were present in the downtown area during the night of the violence.

Residents Concerned After Viral Incident

Republican mayoral candidate Corey Bowman has stressed the need to address what he sees as a pervasive mismanagement issue in the city. He asserts that city policies are failing to adequately support law enforcement, limiting their ability to act effectively. “Police aren’t being backed as they should be,” said Vice President Bowman. “They feel restrained in how they can enforce laws. They’re essentially told to ease up.”

Standing at a street corner in a district that had already witnessed two deadly shootings recently, Bowman criticized the city’s lenient policies regarding bail for violent offenders.

“I’ve had many officers tell me they’d arrest individuals only to see them back on the streets the very next day,” he remarked. In reference to one of the suspects arrested from the viral brawl, he noted that Matthews had managed to post bail.

“It’s one thing to witness crime. But witnessing crimes that could be prevented by properly incarcerating offenders? That’s another matter entirely.”

Critiques on Crime Policies

Bowman and other Ohio Republicans have criticized the Democratic policies they believe have contributed to the recent spike in violence, claiming it’s created an atmosphere of fear.

According to citywide data, Cincinnati’s crime rates mirror those from the previous year, with about 15,000 reported crimes, although there has been a slight reduction since August 2023.

Bowman argues that Mayor Pureval has not been effective in bolstering support for law enforcement. He highlighted the extensive time it takes for police departments to enhance their ranks through lateral hiring processes, noting that this delays necessary police presence on the streets.

“We must seek assistance, whether it’s from state or federal agencies, to tackle the issues we’re facing downtown effectively,” he stated.

Budget Concerns and Resource Allocation

Bowman noted that 64% of the city budget is directed towards public safety. However, he argues that funds are not being strategically allocated, pointing to initiatives draining resources from police departments under the guise of public safety.
