Mike Johnson Indicates the House Will Move Forward Despite GOP Delays on Voting

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Upcoming Legislative Plans

House Speaker Mike Johnson shared with Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures” that the House is set to reconvene in Washington, D.C., on Monday to advance their legislative agenda.

The anticipated vote, originally scheduled for Friday, was postponed following opposition from a faction led by Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna from Florida. This group insisted on a standstill until the Senate approved the Protecting American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE). Johnson expressed his commitment to ensuring that the momentum of the House’s efforts shouldn’t be stifled by perceived Democratic hindrances in the Senate regarding election integrity.

Johnson mentioned to Bartiromo, “I told Anna Paulina Luna and some other colleagues that halting our productive work in the House because Senate Democrats are unwilling to act wouldn’t make sense. We have a lot on our plate and need to keep pushing forward.”

Among those voting against an amendment connecting the SAVE America Act to the Immigration Enforcement Reconciliation Act were Republican Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis, and Mitch McConnell, alongside 46 Democrats.

Looking ahead, Johnson stated that House Republicans intend to incorporate the SAVE America Act into the reconciliation bill and are also set to tackle the National Defense Authorization Act, the reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, as well as various funding bills.

He explained, “This time we’re placing it in a reconciliation bill simply because that allows us to bypass the 60-vote requirement in the Senate. Democrats might shy away from this, but it’s fundamentally straightforward.”

“We just want to ensure that proof of citizenship is necessary for voter registration and that identification is required when voters go to the polls,” he added. “Public sentiment strongly favors this; over 70% of Democrats support it, yet their representatives in the House and Senate seem resistant.”

In a statement on Truth Social, former President Trump indicated that he wouldn’t back the reauthorization of FISA unless the SAVE America Act is included, warning that federal funding might be withheld from states that don’t comply.

“We must have everyone operating effectively, and I’m looking forward to their return,” said Johnson.

The Senate has been adjourned since Wednesday and will reconvene on July 13, following Trump’s cancellation of the signing ceremony for the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, a decision taken after the Senate failed to pass the SAVE America Act.
