A Missouri teacher says she is quitting her job after being brutally assaulted by a student and a video of the assault posted on social media.
“I’m scared to go back there. I don’t trust my kids. I don’t trust this system,” Cheryl Rogers, 65, said in an interview. on KMOV-TV.
Rogers had previously returned to teaching in St. Louis after retirement, but said she no longer felt safe.
In January, Rogers was punched at Normandy Collaborative High School by a student who was angry that his belongings had been taken away. She was beaten and had her hair pulled in the hallway as her children watched.
“I could see the feet of the children around me, but no one came to help me,” she said.
Rogers said the school district offered her no assistance, and despite her injuries, she hoped to return to work the next day.
“I still have bruises on both my legs, a throbbing pain in the back of my head, and sometimes I cry uncontrollably,” she added.

For over 20 years, Cheryl has been more than just a teacher. She was a mentor, guide, and beacon of hope for our community. In 2020, she received the St. Louis American Foundation’s Teaching Excellence Award. Her dedication to her students and unwavering commitment to education has touched the lives of countless people.
According to the report, the former teacher was left with not only physical but also psychological scars.
“I stopped crying every day a few days ago,” she said. “That student was hurt, but it wasn’t even about me. It was something else and I just happened to be the target.”
It is said that many teachers quit because of student violence.
“There are thousands of teachers leaving the profession, so that should tell you something,” Rogers concluded.
KMOV reported that due to student privacy, the punishment for the student was unknown.
