Moonshot Seeks $50 Billion Valuation Ahead of IPO

Moonshot, a Chinese artificial intelligence company, aims for a valuation of $50 billion in its upcoming funding round. This comes just days after the launch of its new Kim K3 model, stirring conversation about China’s advancing capabilities in AI, potentially rivaling major firms like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Based in Beijing, Moonshot is working to secure financing before its potential public listing in Hong Kong, as noted by an insider. There’s talk that an initial public offering could occur later this year.

Reports indicate that the company expects to finalize a funding round valued at $31.5 billion, with discussions having started earlier this summer.

If successful, Moonshot intends to quickly raise more funds, eyeing that ambitious $50 billion target before its IPO.

Founded in 2023 by Yan Zilin, who trained at Carnegie Mellon University, Moonshot gained significant attention with the introduction of Kimi K3, which utilizes a staggering 2.8 trillion parameters—making it the largest open-source model released to date.

Mere days ago, in benchmark tests, Kimi K3 outperformed Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s ChatGPT 5.5 in various coding tasks. However, it has yet to reach the power of Anthropic’s cutting-edge Fable model.

Moonshot recently announced it would pause new subscriptions for its model to focus on existing customers, citing “unprecedented computing challenges.”

U.S. officials are increasingly alarmed by the surging popularity of Chinese open-source AI models, which are accessible for free and considerably more affordable than the proprietary options provided by firms like Anthropic and OpenAI.

This situation could heighten the competition in the ongoing U.S.-China AI contest. Back in February, Anthropic publicly accused Moonshot of borrowing its technology.

Currently, Anthropic holds a valuation of $965 billion and is set to go public later this year. Meanwhile, OpenAI, valued at approximately $852 billion, has also made its intentions to IPO known, though some reports suggest a potential postponement until 2027.
