On Friday, the U.S. Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that North Carolina will become the latest state to participate in IRS Direct File for the 2025 filing season.
Across 12 states, 140,000 taxpayers used new free online filing tools to claim more than $90 million in refunds and save an estimated $5.6 million in filing costs.
At least 1.25 million North Carolinians will have access to a free online filing tool this coming filing season.
“Thanks to President Biden’s Beat Inflation Act, more than 1.25 million North Carolina taxpayers will be able to file their taxes online directly with the IRS for free this upcoming filing season,” said Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen. “Direct File will save North Carolinians time and money, and ensure they get the tax benefits due to them.”
Gov. Roy Cooper said the new system will help save North Carolinians money.
“Filing taxes can be a stressful, expensive and time-consuming task for North Carolina taxpayers and their families,” said Gov. Roy Cooper. “The IRS Direct File tool removes unnecessary hurdles and fees by allowing taxpayers to file directly with the IRS at no cost, helping them keep more money in their pockets. This resource will help qualifying families access tax credits.”
