Nadler questions Supreme Court ethics after Alito flag debacle: ‘None of them have clean hands’

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D.Y.) has criticized Supreme Court ethics after Justice Samuel Alito was criticized earlier this week for displaying an upside-down American flag outside his Virginia home in 2021. brought the issue back to light.

“None of them have clean hands, none of them have clean hands,” Nadler said Saturday on MSNBC’s “The Weekend.” “Again, he needs two things: We need to enforce the ethics code. And we need term limits on the Supreme Court.”

Mr. Nadler, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, is just the latest lawmaker to scrutinize Mr. Alito. new york times reported Thursday that an upside-down flag flew outside a home in Alexandria, Virginia, on January 17, 2021, and may have been displayed for several days immediately following the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

He said Justice Alito did not deny that the flag had been flown for “several days” when he spoke about the report with “Fox News Sunday” host Shannon Bream on Friday.

“That’s not to say it didn’t matter to him,” Nadler said Saturday. “He had been flying for a few hours, and if he had known that and said, ‘Get off me,’ it might have been a different story, but he had been flying for a few days.”

“He should definitely recuse himself from any incident related to January 6th, any incident related to President Trump,” he continued, “because whether he wants to be or not, he is currently ‘ Because he is involved in the Stop the Steal movement.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) first asked Alito to recuse himself from all lawsuits related to the 2020 election and the January 6 riot. Shortly afterward, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York said Mr. Alito, an appointee of President George W. Bush, should at least apologize for his “disrespect” for the American flag.

In response to the Times report, Alito said he had “no involvement” with the flag. Rather, he claimed his wife “easily installed it” in response to a neighbor’s use of derogatory language on a sign in their yard.

Legal experts told the outlet that Alito violated ethics rules regarding the display of the flag, which could raise questions about his neutrality regarding the January 6 and presidential election cases.

Alito and Justice Clarence Thomas have come under scrutiny for their ethics after it was revealed that they accompanied billionaires on vacation and received lavish gifts without reporting them. Lawmakers have since asked the high court to enact clearer ethics rules.
