In New Orleans, Democratic leaders are not happy with President Trump’s recent suggestion to send National Guard troops to combat crime. They view this move as a politically charged tactic that exploits concerns over public safety.
Trump made headlines on Wednesday with comments hinting at deploying resources to cities like New Orleans, where he stated, “It’s easier than D.C. to fix the crime problem.” Notably, he praised Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, suggesting that they would “straighten out a very wonderful section of this country.”
Governor Landry seems open to the idea, indicating he welcomes President Trump’s assistance from New Orleans to Shreveport. However, this has sparked resistance from local officials.
Democratic City Council President Helena Moreno criticized Trump’s remarks, asserting there has been significant improvement in crime rates in New Orleans. She described his approach as an attack on specific cities, adding that many mayors face crime issues without receiving similar attention. “It indicates a move to politicize public safety, potentially misusing taxpayer resources for political gain,” Moreno argued. She’s vowed to oppose any federal takeover of the city.
Troy Carter, a Democrat representing New Orleans, labeled Trump’s comments a “political stunt.” He emphasized that militarizing the city isn’t a viable solution. Instead, Carter proposed working with the President to enhance police staffing, funding for prosecutors, and addressing the root causes of crime, including systemic poverty.
Both the city and the New Orleans Police Department stated they have been collaborating consistently with federal partners, including the Louisiana State Police. They highlighted that the dedication of the police force, alongside advanced technology, plays a crucial role in the downward trend of crime.
In a joint statement, they reiterated their commitment to maintaining public safety, especially during major events. The emphasis remains on fostering strong partnerships and responsiveness to the community’s needs.
