Sanctuary City Policies and Deportation Efforts

The ongoing sanctuary city policies continue to shield undocumented immigrants who have criminal backgrounds, coinciding with the Trump administration’s push to strengthen deportation measures.

On Monday, the Department of Homeland Security revealed that there are numerous undocumented immigrants with criminal records currently held in New York City, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) aims to deport them.

“We commend these detainees, so ICE won’t have to send a large force,” said an official.

Tricia McLaughlin, the assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, expressed concerns: “We’re witnessing convicted criminal aliens getting released from prison and returning to cities like New York or Chicago—places where they can commit crimes again.”

“Right now, there are around 7,169 criminal undocumented individuals in jails across New York City,” she added. “This includes hundreds of murderers, sex offenders, and drug traffickers—the most dangerous among them.”

McLaughlin urged the politicians in sanctuary cities to collaborate with immigration authorities to eliminate these known threats.

“We commend these detainees so we don’t need ice agents overwhelming the area. This helps us remove violent offenders from New York City jails and spares us from having to put our men and women on the ground,” she further noted.

The upcoming mayor of New York, Zoran Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, has pledged to resist attacks on immigrants, openly criticizing current Mayor Eric Adams for cooperating with the Trump administration.

In October, Mamdani labeled ICE as a “reckless agency,” arguing that such cooperation is ineffective. “We must change the law and stand up against Washington,” he stated.

Following his election, Mamdani issued a warning directed at ICE. “My message is clear: all individuals in this city will be held to the same legal standards. If laws are broken, accountability is necessary,” he emphasized.

“Sadly, there’s an increasing belief across the nation that certain individuals—whether it’s the president or his agents—are permitted to break the law. What New Yorkers are looking for is consistency and clarity, and that’s what I intend to provide.”
