Newsweek falsely claimed that a migrant caravan moving through southern Mexico in hopes of eventually reaching the U.S. border is turning back in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's election. Contrary to Newsweek's report, the caravan is still moving through southern Mexico.
In a report released Thursday, newsweek, One New York-based political reporter claimed in the newspaper that “migrants are abandoning caravans to the United States because Donald Trump's election victory has shattered their dreams of escape.”
In the article, reporters cited some migrants who expressed dissatisfaction with the election, but there was no actual information that the caravan of more than 2,500 migrants had disbanded, left, or continued. The reporter then elaborated on President Trump's previous comments about immigration, walls, and calls for mass deportations.
The article also did not quote Mexican immigration or public security officials who could confirm or deny such claims. These officials track and guard various caravans moving through the southern part of the country.
This article used AP video containing archival footage of another caravan from early October. Newsweek magazine also used photos of yet another caravan from July.
Breitbart Texas spoke with a senior Mexican immigration official who confirmed the caravan was still moving north and provided photos taken on Thursday and Friday.
On Thursday afternoon, the caravan arrived in the town of Escuintla, Chiapas, where it spent the night and continued its journey early Friday morning.
Breitbart Texas reported that the caravan left Tapachula, Chiapas, on Mexico's southern border, on Tuesday morning. Contrary to a Newsweek report, the caravan continued to march slowly under police escort on Wednesday and Thursday, after the results of the US presidential election were widely known. Since their initial departure, they have traveled more than 75 kilometers to their current location. The caravan's goal is to reach Mexico City, and like various other caravans before it, it is expected to disperse and find alternative routes to the northern border.
