Newsom Criticizes DOJ Investigation into Trump
California Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed strong disapproval of the Justice Department’s decision to investigate former President Trump, framing it as an attack on his political ambitions.
Last month, Newsom suggested that the inquiry could potentially derail his hopes for a presidential run in 2028, directing blame towards Trump. “Federal agents are approaching families and former staff, not because they’ve uncovered a crime, but in search of one. They’re demanding records and misusing the grand jury process to sift through years of unrelated documents,” he remarked. “Trump’s targeting me isn’t a reaction to my tweets; it’s because I might run for president, and he detests that I keep calling him out on his falsities.”
However, more information has emerged regarding the investigation. Reports indicate that Alexis Podesta, a Democratic insider, recorded conversations during a probe focused on Dana Williamson, who was Newsom’s then-chief of staff. Williamson recently pled guilty to federal fraud and tax charges.
The situation becomes more intriguing with the details surfacing. “The fact that she wore a wire back in June 2024 explains the shock of many political insiders when they were informed their calls had been tapped during the investigation,” the report suggested.
So, June 2024. Do you see the connection? That’s right, Joe Biden was in office during that time.
This raises questions about whether Trump could have orchestrated the wiretap through the Biden administration. Unless one thinks Trump reached out from Mar-a-Lago, asking, “Hey, can you wiretap Newsom’s crew?” it seems Newsom may not be being entirely truthful.
Ultimately, the political dynamics at play reveal deeper motivations. Newsom, openly considering a presidential bid if Biden does not run again, seems to be positioning himself against the current president while also posing a challenge to former Vice President Kamala Harris.
In my view, this investigation appears to be a valid inquiry into genuine misconduct by Newsom and his associates. Nevertheless, I find it fascinating, regardless of any political undertones. After all, they were the ones who initiated this back-and-forth.
