Raskin Reacts to Anti-Trump Rhetoric Following Threats

Representative Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, appeared somewhat taken aback when CNN’s Dana Bash inquired if he had considered the party’s intense anti-Trump language, especially given the context of the recent assassination attempts on the president.

Raskin, who is the leading Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, was present at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner when a man discharged multiple gunshots while attempting to breach a security checkpoint. This alarming incident resulted in the evacuation of President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and key members of his administration. In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday morning, Raskin seemed puzzled when asked whether he had thought about the politically charged statements he and other Democrats had made against Trump in light of the situation.

“What kind of rhetoric do you have in mind?” Raskin replied when Bash pressed him on the matter.

“We’re just discussing the fact that he’s a horrible asset to this country and all that,” Bash interjected, summing up the general perspective of Democrats regarding Trump, who has faced three assassination attempts over the past two years. “I understand that this is your democratic right. But, overall, don’t you have a responsibility?”

“I have no personal issues with Donald Trump,” Raskin responded sharply. “I’m critiquing the policies of this administration, particularly its authoritarian tendencies. We witnessed such authoritarianism in Minneapolis, where individuals were killed simply for exercising their First Amendment rights. People like Renee Goode and Alex Preti died in custody.”

“I’m focused solely on policy,” he insisted, arguing against the notion that he was personalizing the matter.

Raskin went on to claim, “And I never labeled the press as ‘enemies of the people,’” seemingly shifting the topic by referring to a past Trump remark. “I think the press is our best ally, and that’s why it’s enshrined in the First Amendment. We rely on the media to act as vigilant watchdogs over all government levels: federal, state, and local.”

As a notable adversary of Trump in Congress, Raskin has established a strong reputation. He was the lead House impeachment manager during the second impeachment of Trump in 2021 and served on the Jan. 6 Committee. Raskin, representing many in his party, sees Trump as a distinct threat to American governance, previously stating that Trump poses a significant issue as long as he continues to undermine the country’s constitutional democracy.

In October 2025, during an MSNBC appearance, Raskin described that month’s “No Kings” protests as “totally positive, totally patriotic” and aligned with a “Love America” movement. Interestingly, he overlooked reports that some protesters had made threats against President Trump and his administration.

Bash had previously mentioned, “The political rhetoric we’ve seen has become quite extreme, and that’s likely linked to the rise in political violence.” Raskin responded by expressing his relief that President Trump took action, referencing that evening’s dinner. He spoke about the numerous attacks on journalists and the legal challenges facing news organizations. “There have been horrifying assaults on the First Amendment and the freedom of the press,” he said, suggesting that it was an opportune moment to reaffirm the nation’s core values.
