Mike Pence Supports Trump’s Actions on Crime in D.C.

In a recent interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, former Vice President Mike Pence expressed his support for President Donald Trump’s measures to address crime in Washington, D.C. This conversation came up during a segment on “The Nation,” where Pence was asked about Trump’s decision to send hundreds of National Guard troops to the capital following the criticism regarding his response to the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.

Tapper questioned Pence about Trump’s deployment of the National Guard amid heightened lawlessness in D.C. He noted the juxtaposition of Trump’s actions on that day, implying concern over the president’s initial reluctance to engage while the Capitol was under siege.

Pence characterized January 6th as a “tragic day” but went on to praise Trump’s decisions aimed at curtailing crime in the city. He framed the president’s deployment of the National Guard as an essential step in temporarily bolstering local police efforts and tackling the city’s rising murder rates. Pence remarked, “January 6th was a tragic day. But we know that we fulfilled our duties that day. We hope the President does more. But we welcome his decision to deploy the National Guard and essentially federalize the D.C. Police Department.” He added that this approach could lead to improved coordination amongst law enforcement.

In his remarks, Pence noted that if D.C. were a standalone nation, it would ironically hold the highest murder rate in the country, making the president’s response absolutely crucial. He emphasized the importance of making the Streets of D.C. safer and providing resources that can extend to cities across the nation.

However, top Democrats have countered this narrative, arguing that Trump’s interventions are unfounded. They pointed out that violent crime rates are currently at a 30-year low. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) criticized Trump’s claims, insisting that there’s no justification for federal control over local police operations.

In a press conference, President Trump maintained that D.C.’s crime rates outstrip those of notoriously violent cities globally. He noted a worrying surge in incidents like car thefts and carjacking, implying a dire need for decisive action. In a somewhat vague prediction, he also mentioned that the murder figures for 2023 could be alarming, comparing them to statistics from 25 years prior, yet he acknowledged the uncertainty in drawing those comparisons.
