Pope Leo Supports Pro-Family Policies to Encourage a Steady Partnership Between a Man and a Woman

Pope Leo XIV Emphasizes Family Union as Civilization’s Foundation

During a recent address to the Vatican diplomatic corps, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the essential role of the union between men and women as the cornerstone of civilization. He suggested that governments should prioritize family formation to cultivate a more harmonious and peaceful society, echoing sentiments voiced by populist figures like Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.

In his speech on Friday, the Pope referred back to his predecessor, Leo XIII’s notable 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum. This document was crafted during a time marked by intense social upheaval, as Marxist and anarchist movements emerged in response to the tumultuous Industrial Revolution and the exploitation of workers.

Rerum Novarum aimed to address these societal shifts, affirming the dignity of laborers while advocating for the rights of property owners and a moral framework that recognized the mutual obligations between employees and employers. Both the extreme laissez-faire capitalism and aggressive socialism were criticized for their failure to grasp the inherent inequalities of the world.

In this encyclical, Leo XIII urged both industrialists and workers to fulfill their responsibilities toward one another in order to enhance societal conditions. He advised workers to avoid riots and unfocused strikes, while suggesting that employers should provide fair wages and decent working environments. He proposed that a thoughtful individual could manage to support their family while still saving for future needs.

In a speech to the Cardinals following his election, Pope Leo XIV expressed that he chose his papal name in honor of Leo XIII and his encyclical, Rerum Novarum. He felt inspired to continue along a similar path, addressing social issues amid rapid change, such as human dignity and justice within the labor context.

In his address to the Vatican diplomats, he reiterated the necessity for policies that bolster workers and their families as a collective good. According to his remarks, building a harmonious civil society is a shared duty for government leaders, achievable through significant investment in families, which he sees as integral to a stable community.

The Pope’s reaffirmation of the church’s stance on marriage being between a man and a woman aligns with the positions taken by various Western populist leaders.

Faced with a demographic crisis affecting many Western nations, Orban’s government has countered the libertarian approach of minimal state interference, instead embracing family-focused initiatives like income exemptions for mothers and special loans for childbirth. These measures aim to support families in their efforts to thrive.

Although Hungary still falls short of the 2.1 children per woman required for population sustainability, Orban’s policies have led to an increase from 1.23 in 2011 to 1.51 in 2023, despite the challenges presented by the pandemic and war in Ukraine.

Orban views Donald Trump’s potential re-election as a pivotal moment for global politics, suggesting that families and patriotic movements now dominate the Western landscape.

Vance, who is a proponent of the natalist movement within the Trump administration, has argued that the Republican Party should prioritize being “more pro-baby and pro-family.” His focus is on making it easier for families to have children without financial strain, believing that supporting young families is key to bolstering society.

Some parental policies from figures like Vance and Orban stand in contrast to free trade and neoliberal ideologies advocating open borders.

Pope Leo’s address emphasized that dignity must be acknowledged for everyone, particularly the most vulnerable, including the unborn and the elderly, along with both unemployed citizens and immigrants.

However, prior to his papacy, Leo had recognized the complex issue of mass migration, referring to it as a significant global challenge, yet one that can be addressed while still respecting the humanity of those involved.
