Democratic Strategist Critiques LA Protests and Trump’s Gains
Chuck Rocha, a Democratic strategist, expressed concern on Tuesday that recent protests against ICE in Los Angeles could inadvertently benefit President Donald Trump. Appearing on “CNN This Morning,” Rocha, who is of Mexican-American descent, criticized liberal supporters for their aggressive stance against immigration enforcement, suggesting that these demonstrations might actually play into Trump’s hands.
He stated, “If this is about immigration, and we were discussing how broken the system is and what ICE is currently doing, then these protests might be more understandable.” His comments came amid rising tensions between protestors and law enforcement.
Protests Escalate Amid ICE Operations
Operations conducted by ICE across various businesses in Los Angeles led to protests and confrontations outside several locations last Friday. Days following this, significant unrest unfolded with violent clashes reported. The Department of Homeland Security cautioned local leaders about the possibility of repeated riots.
In a statement, the DHS noted that over 1,000 people surrounded a federal law enforcement facility, attacking ICE officials and causing property damage. It took two hours for the LAPD to respond effectively.
In light of the escalating situation, Trump decided to deploy thousands of National Guard members to the area, followed by the order to send 700 Marines to restore order.
Rocha acknowledged that the disarray presented a negative image for Democrats, playing directly into Trump’s strengths regarding border security. He mentioned during the interview, “In the last election, Audie, Republicans spent $800 million portraying Americans as being invaded by immigrants, making it the focal point of their campaign.” Rocha argued that these riots detract from the president’s vulnerabilities in other policy areas.
“This confusion is exactly what he thrives on because it shifts the dialogue away from pressing issues, like healthcare for 13 million people,” he remarked. “We are not discussing significant legislative matters; instead, we’re fixated on immigration and law enforcement in Los Angeles.”
He also referenced California Governor Gavin Newsom’s response to the situation, indicating that it puts further pressure on the administration. Newsom had criticized Trump’s military deployments within the U.S., stating, “US Marines have served heroically in multiple wars. They shouldn’t be used against their fellow citizens to please the whims of an authoritarian president.”
