Putin’s Frustration at Alaska Summit
During the Alaska High Stakes Summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin didn’t hold back his frustration toward the press. While President Donald Trump was accustomed to a different level of media scrutiny, Putin seemed quite displeased with the attention he received from reporters. As they tried to ask him questions, he exhibited visible irritation, which wasn’t very surprising given his background as a former KGB agent.
Trump Under Pressure to Secure Deal
As the summit approached, Trump faced increasing pressure from both national and international leaders to strike a deal with Putin and potentially end the ongoing hostilities. Interestingly, even Hillary Clinton, a former rival, suggested a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for Trump if he managed to negotiate a ceasefire in Ukraine. Despite his complex relationship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump managed to coordinate with both leaders.
Before the U.S.-Russia Summit on Friday, Zelensky met with European leaders and attended a gathering involving Vice President JD Vance, which was important in the lead-up to discussions. On the preceding Wednesday, Trump also engaged with European leaders, preparing for this significant consultation.
Mixed Outcomes from the Meeting
Though the meeting between Trump and Putin did not result in a finalized deal, it has been viewed as a constructive step forward. In an interview with Sean Hannity, Trump described the summit as “very good,” noting that Putin “wants to do this.” However, Trump didn’t clarify what specific issue had prevented them from reaching an agreement.
European leaders expressed their appreciation for Trump’s attempts to halt the violence in Ukraine and demanded strong security guarantees for Ukraine’s sovereignty, emphasizing the need for long-lasting peace.
Zelenskyy’s Upcoming Plans
Zelensky is set to meet with Trump in Washington, D.C., on Monday. He shared on social media that they will “discuss all the details regarding the end of the war.” Interestingly, both Trump and Zelensky, who weren’t part of the Alaska Summit, are eager for a trilateral meeting that includes Putin. So far, however, Putin hasn’t taken steps toward initiating such discussions.
On Saturday, Zelensky urged Trump to consider tightening sanctions if Putin remains unresponsive to trilateral talks. This reflects Trump’s previous warnings that Russia would face “very harsh” economic consequences should they disrupt the peace process.
