Rep. Abe Hamadeh Proposes Measure Denouncing Attempts on Trump's Life

House Resolution to Condemn Assassination Attempts on Trump

A resolution introduced this week in the House seeks to officially denounce both recent and historical attempts on Donald J. Trump’s life, highlighting the ongoing responsibility of federal law enforcement and homeland security given the escalating concerns regarding these threats.

Representative Abe Hamade (R-Ariz.) introduced the measure, which states, “On April 25, 2026, there was an attempt on the life of President Donald J. Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C.,” detailing a series of incidents, including earlier attempts on July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania, and on September 15, 2024, in West Palm Beach, Florida. This resolution has been sent to the House Judiciary and Homeland Security Committees and commends “law enforcement personnel for their professionalism and heroism during this attack.”

On April 25, 2026, the individual suspected of this attack was recognized as 31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen from Torrance, California. He allegedly forced his way through a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton during the dinner event and discharged several rounds before being subdued. A Secret Service agent sustained a chest wound but was protected by a bulletproof vest and was later reported to be in stable condition.

Allen, armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, a .38-caliber pistol, and several knives, had even taken a pre-attack selfie showcasing his weapons. Prosecutors noted that a senior Trump administration official had planned to send an email outlining his intentions and that Allen had a manifesto detailing his plans to target officials from the Trump administration.

Reports indicate that prior to the attack, Allen joined in “No Kings” protests, made a $25 donation to Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign, and traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago before arriving in Washington, D.C.

The resolution also raises concerns about security and funding, declaring that “Democrats’ radical demands, juxtaposed with growing threats, have left the Department of Homeland Security facing its longest spending backlog ever.” It warns that “continuing calls for violence against the President and other public figures violates American tradition, undermining our democratic process.”

The bill resolves to “condemn the assassination attempt,” “express gratitude to law enforcement officers,” and “recognize the vital mission of the Department of Homeland Security alongside the need for full funding.” Additionally, it calls on “all Americans to unite against political violence.”

Hamadeh remarked, “I introduced a resolution to condemn the assassination attempt on President Trump and honor the brave officers who prevented a tragedy. But let’s be clear: mere condemnation isn’t enough. We need to tackle the toxic rhetoric from the left that is fueling this violence and cool the tensions before political violence becomes a norm in America.”

Other Congressional members shared their support for the resolution. Rep. August Pflueger (R-Texas), chairman of the Republican Study Committee, expressed solidarity with Hamade, stating, “This weekend was a grim reminder of the serious threats this president faces daily. Leftist political violence is escalating, and I stand with Rep. Hamade in calling for accountability. Congress must denounce this attack and ensure DHS is fully funded without delay. In such a high-threat environment, our agencies can’t afford to be understaffed.”

Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.), who attended the dinner, added, “Nobody should object to denouncing the attempt on President Trump’s life. Thanks to Rep. Hamadeh and his security team, we managed to escape unharmed. Incidents like this should never happen where people can freely express themselves without fear of violence.”

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) emphasized the responsibility of Congress, stating, “It is crucial for all members to strongly condemn the assassination attempt on President Trump. The extreme left has shown alarming tolerance for political violence against him. I was proud to join my colleagues in this resolution, making it clear that this stance is morally unacceptable.”

A research analysis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies highlighted that anti-government violence is expected to hit a 30-year peak in 2025. Domestic attacks against government targets have soared to the highest levels seen since at least 1994. The study noted that incidents linked to the far left would likely surpass those from the far right in 2025, a trend expected to persist into 2026.

An April 2025 survey revealed that 38% of respondents felt that killing President Trump was at least somewhat justifiable. This figure climbed to 56% among those identifying as center-left.
