Rui Hachimura Signs with Clippers, Leaving Lakers Behind

The Los Angeles Lakers faced yet another setback on Monday as Rui Hachimura inked a two-year deal worth $28 million with the Los Angeles Clippers, their local rivals.

Shortly after the announcement, Hachimura shared a touching message for Lakers fans, expressing gratitude for his time with the team.

“Thank you, Lakers Nation, for the past three years. There have been some great moments, and I will always remember the memories we made together,” he posted on Instagram.

During his tenure with the Lakers, Hachimura’s journey began when he was traded from the Washington Wizards in exchange for Kendrick Nunn and three second-round picks. It’s interesting to think back on how that trade played out; he really became a key asset.

In the 2025-26 season, he posted solid numbers: averaging 11.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 0.8 assists, shooting an impressive 51.4 percent overall and 44.3 percent from three-point range. His ability from beyond the arc really stood out, particularly in the playoffs, where he elevated his game to average 17.5 points and 4.0 rebounds.

Now, Hachimura is set to join the projected starting lineup for the Clippers, which includes names like Darius Garland and Brandon Ingram. The transition must be exciting for him, but I imagine it’s also bittersweet to leave the Lakers.

Meanwhile, the Lakers have likely wrapped up most of their free agency moves this offseason. Still, fans are eagerly waiting to see if general manager Rob Pelinka will finalize the roster with a few more adjustments.

While the team’s financial flexibility is rather limited, there are pressing needs. Some had speculated about Hachimura’s potential role as a versatile wing defender, but it’s now clear his time with the Lakers has come to an end. There’s also buzz about the Lakers pursuing free agent Jonathan Kuminga, although that would require maneuvering to free up cap space.

Additionally, the Lakers are still searching for a backup center following the trade of Deandre Ayton to the Wizards. This situation highlights just how much work remains for the Lakers before the season kicks off.
