Russia cautions that Trump's significant strikes on Iran might lead to a 'nuclear disaster'

Concerns Raised Over US Strikes on Iran

Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, has expressed serious concerns regarding the air strikes conducted by the Trump administration on Iran. He called these actions a “Pandora’s Box,” indicating the potential for a severe global “nuclear catastrophe.” During an emergency Security Council meeting on Sunday, Nebenzia condemned what he described as irresponsible and provocative actions by the United States against Iran, a member state of the United Nations.

“By taking this action, the US has essentially opened Pandora’s Box, and it’s uncertain what new repercussions this may bring,” Nebenzia remarked. He emphasized that, given the current situation, “it’s pretty evident that the Middle East stands on the brink of a significant conflict unless escalating tensions cease, which could have unpredictable effects on global security.”

Iran’s Nuclear Facilities Under Strike

In a related development, Iran’s Fordow nuclear site faced a second attack, coinciding with IDF targeting access routes in the area. Nebenzia accused the US administration of being “completely indifferent” to the potential fallout and the safety of countless civilians, including vulnerable women and children in the region.

“We’ve consistently offered our services for mediation to our American counterparts in search of a peaceful resolution to the issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear ambitions. But, it seems that genuine diplomacy is something they are lacking at the moment,” he added.

IAEA Director’s Comments

Rafael Grossi, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), noted potential extensive damage at the Fordow site. He commented, “Considering the explosive munitions used and the sensitivity of the centrifuges, we anticipate substantial destruction.” He also confirmed that linked structures involved in uranium processing had been struck and that cruise missiles were utilized in these attacks.

Furthermore, Grossi disclosed that the Natanz enrichment facility was also targeted, specifically mentioning that ground-infiltrating munitions were deployed there.

Despite the attacks, Iran has assured the IAEA that there hasn’t been any rise in offsite radiation levels at the affected sites.
